African American Rhinoplasty

African American Rhinoplasty in Toronto

Among the leading experts in African American rhinoplasty Toronto, Dr. Solomon understands the importance of maintaining one’s ethnicity in their rhinoplasty.

If you are of an African-American ethnic background, your nose is representative of your heritage and it is not our goal to erase or change that. Many patients approach us wanting to refine their appearance but without losing the representation of where they come from.

An African American rhinoplasty Toronto takes into account the specific qualities of an African American nose and face, keeping them intact and ensuring that a patient is not stripped of their nationality, personality, or ethnic identity.
Dr. Solomon has extensive experience with African-American rhinoplasties and is well versed in the specific goals and desires of the community and unique aspects of their facial anatomy.

“In general terms, African-Americans have thicker skin, wider nasal passages, flatter nasal bridges, and wider nasal bones,” says Dr. Solomon. “They have different facial features in general, and the goal is to enhance and improve their aesthetics and create facial harmony, not make them look Caucasian.”

Getting to Know African American Rhinoplasty Toronto Techniques

“While Caucasian patients may be looking to make their noses smaller, African-American patients may need to augment or enhance the height of their nasal bridge to give them the best-looking nose,” says Dr. Solomon. “It’s not all about reducing. It’s about reshaping.”

Because African-American noses generally have weaker nasal cartilage in the tip and thicker skin, their noses can have wider-appearing tips and nostrils. By raising the bridge, Dr. Solomon believes the proportions between the nose and other facial features improve for a natural and aesthetically pleasing outcome. Raising the bridge often requires a cartilage graft, which can be taken from the nasal septum, ear or rib. Strengthening the tip can also produce an aesthetic improvement in proportional facial harmony while maintaining a natural African-American nose. The tip can be strengthened with a cartilage graft or an implant like Medpore.

African-American Rhinoplasty With Dr. Solomon

Any successful African-American rhinoplasty begins with selecting the right surgeon. You want a rhinoplasty surgeon who has an intimate understanding of the shapes and forms that are appropriate and compatible with your existing facial features; a surgeon who will understand how to accentuate your best features and diminish the aesthetic impact of your less favourable features; and someone who will be able to provide a balanced, harmonious appearance. Making up a significant percentage of the population in the culturally diverse city of Toronto, African-Americans also make up a fair portion of the patients we receive at our clinic. Highly accustomed to serving patients from all different ethnic backgrounds, Dr. Solomon has the experience to deliver high quality results that are appropriate for a patient’s heritage and background. Not only have we had patients from all over Toronto come to seek consultations and/or to schedule African-American rhinoplasty with Dr. Solomon but we have also been regularly visited by patients from all over Ontario and from other parts of Canada as well. All seeking to find the best African-American rhinoplasty with the most effective results, we have developed a reputation as one of the leading clinics in this category of rhinoplasty and are proud to continue to serve the African-American community in this manner.

Setting Realistic Expectations

According to Dr. Solomon, the optimal way to think about your outcome is in terms of an improvement, not perfection. Perfection is rarely achievable, but realistic improvements can be made, as you’ll see browsing through Dr. Solomon’s Before and After images. As evidenced in these photos, every individual has their own facial characteristics and nuances that a rhinoplasty surgeon must be subtle and careful in working with. The African American community in particular tends to have many different sizes and shapes of noses, varying considerably from one patient to the next. Depending on where their families are from in the world, the distinctive features of the nose are sometimes difficult to manage for an inexperienced surgeon.

When you meet with Dr. Solomon, he will assess your nasal and facial structures and be able to explain what a reasonable and realistic outcome will be in terms of your own anatomy. Based on your goals, you and Dr. Solomon will create an individual treatment path. Every patient that comes to us tends to have different concepts as to how they wish to improve their natural facial appearance and in this effort, we remain open to our patients’ suggestions and seek to deliver a result that appears natural to an African-American framework.

What Does An African American Rhinoplasty Toronto Do?

A rhinoplasty of any type is essentially the reshaping of the cartilage and bone of the nose to help achieve the desired look outlined by the patient. There are some patients who seek more dramatic differences in nose shape while others simply want small degrees of change. It is important to maintain realistic expectations for what can be accomplished via an African American rhinoplasty Toronto and to discuss any concerns with Dr. Solomon in the initial steps of consultation. Any questions, he would be happy to answer them.

What To Know About Recovery After African American Rhinoplasty

After your rhinoplasty has been completed, you will be monitored by one of Dr. Solomon’s nurses and when will only be allowed to go home once the effects of the anesthesia have worn off.

Once you are at home, it is important to relax and to ensure that your nose is protected from injury at all costs. Non-strenuous activities such as watching television and reading are recommended. Many patients are caught off-guard by how stuffy their nose is following surgery. Most patients only are able to breathe through their mouth during the first week due to this stuffiness. It is important not to blow your nose for 4 weeks as this could cause damage to the results of your rhinoplasty. If there is pain present, it is likely to be mild to moderate and pain medication will be prescribed to help. Patients may expect to have bruising around their eyes for up to two weeks following the procedure. In addition, the majority of patients return to work roughly a week after the procedure has been completed.

More strenuous activity including exercise is not recommended for 4-6 weeks after surgery. However, you can begin light exercise approximately two weeks after surgery as long as you are meeting all milestones throughout the healing process. Sports where you can be struck in the face accidentally (i.e. hockey, baseball, basketball) are not recommended for at least 4-6 weeks for safety reasons. Typically follow-up visits with Dr. Solomon, the best rhinoplasty surgeon in Toronto, will be scheduled in order to evaluate the results of your rhinoplasty throughout the year that follows surgery.
It must be stressed that it is normal for a nose to appear swollen initially and it can take up to eight weeks for the majority of the swelling to resolve itself. It is also not uncommon for the full scope of swelling to not resolve itself until even up to a year after. As the swelling does begin to subside, you will notice your nose gradually grow thinner and smaller. The tip typically takes the longest to fully settle. The appearance of your nose will continue to improve as time goes on, until it reaches its final form.

Is African-American Rhinoplasty Right For Me?

Though we have seen patients communicate different personal desires, there are several commonalities we have found between patients in the African American community. Generally speaking, those who have come to us seeking an African American rhinoplasty Toronto have done so seeking one or several of these changes; to reshape a narrower alar base (this is where the nostrils meet the face), to create a more defined nasal tip, to reduce nostril flare, and to build a more pronounced bridge. If either of these four changes fit what you wish to have done, you are an excellent candidate for an African American rhinoplasty Toronto, and a comprehensive consultation is recommended in order to go over everything that is needed and desired. It is encouraged for patients to take full advantage of the opportunity to ask questions in order to gain a full understanding of the African-American rhinoplasty process and to ensure that cosmetic goals are outlined thoroughly.

We never approach patients of any ethnic background with a preconceived notion of ‘what they need’. If you are happy with the function and appearance of your nose, there is no reason to make changes. If you are not pleased with the function or look of your nose however and believe that an African-American rhinoplasty may be able to get you the results you deserve, there is no reason not to say yes. Please be re-assured that we look at each patient, intending to provide a highly individualized treatment according to the preferences of the patient and not according to the wants or needs of the clinic. Adhering to the patient’s unique needs and desires, every African-American rhinoplasty plan is designed according to the patient’s preferences. It is our ultimate goal to leave the patient with an enhanced nose that achieves the highest degree of balance, symmetry and beauty possible.
